A horrific event unfolded in mid-May as a young mother was brutally murdered in front of her child in northwest Atlanta. The incident has led to the arrest of an 18-year-old suspect, Cartez Harvey, who faces multiple charges, including murder and aggravated assault.
Nejha Cox, a 21-year-old mother, was found shot on Hollywood Road NW in Atlanta’s Carey Park neighborhood in the early hours of Saturday, May 18. Surveillance footage revealed a targeted attack, showing assailants in another car opening fire on Cox, who was seated in the passenger seat of her vehicle. Her toddler was present during the tragic shooting, adding to the harrowing nature of the crime.
Harvey’s arrest on Wednesday resulted in charges not only for the murder but also for possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, second-degree cruelty to children, and multiple counts related to his alleged association with a criminal street gang. In a related development, police also detained 23-year-old Jamal Baker on June 4 in connection with Cox’s death.
The Carey Park neighborhood, where the incident occurred, has been a hotspot for violent crimes, recording five aggravated assaults since March of this year. Local residents express deep concern about the escalating violence. One resident, who spoke to 11Alive under anonymity, highlighted the pervasive danger in the area, noting that even playgrounds are not safe for children due to frequent violent activities.
