Four pupils hailing from the Cherokee County School District have exhibited remarkable qualities of youth leadership as they earnestly complete the Model Atlanta Regional Commission (MARC) leadership program. This accomplishment is truly inspiring. Juniors Soham Duggal and Lavanya Shankar of River Ridge High School, Ella Biesterveld and Isabel Harper of Sequoyah High School, were among the 45 high school students from the region who participated in this transformative experience this year.
The MARC program is renowned for its thorough curriculum and stringent selection criteria. It is a six-month program that aims to fully engage its participants in the multifaceted challenges that confront the Atlanta area. Affordability of housing, sustainable water utilization, and the evolving challenges of transportation are among the critical topics examined. The program design cultivates an atmosphere in which students assemble monthly on Saturdays, commencing in August, to explore these topics, providing them with an exceptional combination of academic and leadership growth prospects.
In his address to the students during their culminating presentations, Atlanta Mayor and Atlanta Regional Commission Chairman Andre Dickens emphasized the immediate consequences of their leadership. Dickens stated, “You all are the leaders of the present, not just the future,” emphasizing the significance of the students’ shared insights and strategies for positively impacting the metro Atlanta area through their MARC experience.
During the course of the program, attendees actively interacted with community leaders, which afforded them an opportunity to express their perspectives on ways to improve the standard of living in the Atlanta metropolitan region. Educational excursions to the F. Wayne Hill Water Reclamation Facility, the Water Tower, Chamblee City Hall, the Atlanta Community Food Bank, and the innovative Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners were particularly noteworthy. In addition to broadening the students’ comprehension of regional challenges, these experiences stimulated their capacity for critical solution-oriented thought.
As the academic year draws to a close and thoughts turn to the future, the program welcomes applications from incoming juniors and rising sophomores who are interested in becoming a member of the following year’s cohort.
