In a startling case out of Cherokee County, 43-year-old Canton resident Jeremy Lenard Varner was given a 25-year prison term without the possibility of release after admitting to several counts of raping a small child in her own bedroom. Susan Treadaway of the Cherokee County District Attorney stated that Varner will have to register as a sex offender for life after serving his jail sentence.
The girl courageously told a family member in November 2018 that Varner had repeatedly sexually abused her, and that’s when the legal process started. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office started looking into this disclosure right away. The prosecution acknowledged Varner’s connection with the victim’s family, but it concealed details.
DA Treadaway claims that the young victim was spared the agony of having to relate her horrific experiences in front of a judge when the case was settled through a plea agreement. The victim’s fortitude was commended by the DA, who also brought attention to the emotional difficulties she would probably face for many years to come. “This young victim has been incredibly strong throughout this process, but emotionally scars can take a lifetime to heal,” Treadaway said. The negotiated plea, she said, is a way to do justice and spare the victim more suffering.
Varner’s prior criminal record as well as the horrific nature of his acts are reflected in the harshness of his punishment. According to records with the Georgia Department of Corrections, Varner had already done time for a number of crimes, including burglary, methamphetamine possession, and armed robbery. The need of a harsh sentence to stop more damage to the community was highlighted by this criminal past.
The case has had a profound impact on the Cherokee County community and is a sobering reminder of the hazards kids encounter even in their own homes. The victim and her family may finally start the protracted process of healing and moving forward with their lives, thanks in part to the hefty jail term Varner received.

It also highlights the need of the legal system in redressing and making up for such serious wrongs, making sure that offenders are made to answer for their deed.
