Legend of MusicAfter his glamorous musical was attacked by theatergoers and criticized by critics, Elton John has suffered yet another setback.
Only a few days ago, Knewz.com announced that he was accepting the fact that he was nearly blind and that his $25 million Broadway musical, Tammy Faye, was shutting early.
This is the latest blow to the 77-year-old’s West End musical, The Devil Wears Prada.
“Go big or go home seems to be the guiding principle for this musical adaptation of the hit book and film about an aspiring reporter’s foray into the highly strung world of fashion journalism,” one reputable critic stated in The Guardian.
With Elton John’s balladic piano-rock screaming and disco beats thumping, the sound is enormous. The costumes are stunning. The lights for Paris Fashion Week are blazing red, blue, and white as the runway models sashay from all directions.
“It’s large, all right, but maybe it ought to have gone home because what precisely is this? The 2006 movie, which starred Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, is faithfully recreated in this prosecco o clock musical, which was briskly directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell. It does not capture the film’s chilly heart, though.
Another wrote: “This West End production feels stuck in the past, despite Vanessa Williams’ strong portrayal as the intimidating Miranda Priestly.
“You d hope that enlisting Elton John to write the songs would guarantee any musical entry into the former category but, alas,The Devil Wears Pradais truly diabolical.”
Additionally, a viewer posted on the internet: “Prada was a terrible experience. It’s obvious that Elton has lost his touch.
Just five days after opening night, the Crocodile Rocksinger’s Tammy Faye posted its closing notice. Last week, the play, which had gotten positive reviews in the UK before moving to New York, made its farewell appearance.
“God-awful” is how the New York Post characterized the play. Originally sold for over $200, tickets were now being offered for as cheap as $61.
Regarding his health, John, who underwent a hip replacement a few years ago following a fall, stated in an interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America: “I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the South of France.”
“I haven’t been able to see for four months now,” the superstar continued. I don’t have the best left eye. I haven’t done anything in a long time. All I need to do is get off my ass.”
The legendary singer, who also battles cancer, has acknowledged that he is running out of time and only eats a few pieces of fruit every day.
The composer of the Tony-winning hit Billy Elliot: The Musical and the current smash hit The Lion King is in a terrible professional downward spiral.
“At the same time, nobody around Broadway is all that surprised,” the New York Post reviewer continued. The Rocket Man repeatedly crashes to the ground.
“Since Billy premiered in London s West End in 2005, John has delivered dud after dud.”
