In a tragic incident in Gwinnett County, Georgia, the body of 16-year-old Mia Campos, who was pregnant, was discovered by her family in a wooded area near Stephens Road in Loganville. The discovery occurred around 1 a.m. on Monday, following a frantic search after she failed to return home Sunday night.
Mia’s family became alarmed when she did not come back after reportedly leaving with someone. Utilizing her cellphone’s tracking feature, they traced her to the secluded woods, where they found her lifeless body. The medical examiner has since ruled her death a homicide, though the cause of death remains undisclosed as the investigation continues.
Gwinnett County police interviewed Mia’s ex-boyfriend, Jesus Monroy, in connection with the case. On Wednesday, he was charged with providing false statements to the police. Authorities have yet to announce any additional charges or suspects, maintaining a high level of confidentiality due to the seriousness of the case.
Edward Campos, Mia’s father, expressed his grief in an interview with Channel 2’s Michael Doudna, revealing that Mia had supposedly been headed to QuikTrip with Monroy. After hours of unanswered calls, the family realized something was terribly wrong. “They took everything from her, they took everything from me,” Edward Campos lamented. “To see your daughter laid down, it’s hard. There are no words for that.”
Gwinnett County Police Sergeant Collin Flynn emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting the dual loss of Mia and her unborn child. He stated, “The police department is taking this matter extremely seriously, as it should, so that’s why we are withholding some information now.”
In the wake of this tragedy, Mia’s mother, Miriam Zarate, has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses. In a heartfelt message, she wrote, “Mia, my daughter, the girl of my eyes, my baby, has passed away with her son in her belly. I ask God to watch over her and her baby; now she and my grandson are in heaven with God. With all my heart I ask you for help to give her and her baby a dignified burial.”
