Kennesaw Man Arrested for DUI Hit-and-Run Incident Injuring Cyclist in Woodstock

In a startling incident on Thursday afternoon, a cyclist was seriously injured in Woodstock when a Lexus sedan veered off the road and struck him on the sidewalk. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded swiftly to the collision on Main Street, south of Highway 92.

The initial investigation revealed that the cyclist was riding on the sidewalk when the Lexus, driven by 43-year-old Christopher Lee Koonce of Kennesaw, swerved from its lane and drove onto the sidewalk, striking the cyclist. The impact left the cyclist with severe injuries, necessitating immediate transport to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Thankfully, he is expected to survive.

Following the collision, Koonce fled the scene, abandoning his vehicle in a nearby parking lot. However, diligent efforts by investigators led to the identification of Koonce, and they were able to convince him to return to the scene, where he was subsequently arrested.

Koonce faces a slew of charges, including serious injury by vehicle, hit and run, DUI – drugs, weaving over the roadway, possession and use of a drug-related object, and driving on a suspended license. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office also revealed that Koonce has active warrants out of Gwinnett County, compounding his legal troubles.

He is currently being held at the Cherokee County jail without bond.
