As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, now is a great opportunity to evaluate both our own and the mental health of others we care about. The initial move someone makes to seek mental health care may be the one that saves their life.

With seven Managing Entities, Florida has a strong mental health safety net system that supports Floridians through a variety of programs and community partnerships in addition to supervising behavioral health treatment for our underinsured and uninsured population.
These creative initiatives, which are spread throughout Florida, include everything from faith-based alliances to peer support for first responders, and care coordination to help kids and families move from intensive care units to community-based support networks to supportive housing to address homelessness, affordability, and supportive housing. These are but a handful of the programs that Managing Entities oversee.
The community-based Managing Entities of Florida customize mental health services to meet the particular requirements of each of the state’s many towns. The Department of Children and Families funds and oversees the Managing Entities to ensure accountability and openness.
For Florida, the community-based Managing Entity model makes sense since it expedites care delivery and reacts quickly to community changes. Unquestionably, the benefits to Floridians’ lives have been profoundly good. Ninety-two percent of people are kept out of expensive crisis stabilization units, hospital emergency rooms, and jails by Care Coordination. Eighty-three percent of people in crisis are kept out of Baker Act admissions because of Mobile Response Teams.
