Luigi Mangione, the alleged killer of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, may have been searching for a familiar face when he showed up for his initial court appearance on Monday, the day before he got into a fight with the police.
Even though none of his family members were there, Mangione kept turning around in court to gaze into the public gallery, according to Knewz.com.
The 26-year-old, who is facing identity fraud and firearms charges in Pennsylvania, also had no one to support him at his second court appearance the next day. In New York City, he is charged with second-degree murder.
His family issued a public statement saying, “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s sarrest,” even though they did not show up for court.
“We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.”
After CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was shot outside the Hilton Hotel in New York City on Wednesday, December 4, Mangione was charged with second-degree murder.
The suspect reportedly went into a solitary mental health spiral last year as a result of excruciating back pain, and he withdrew from his friends and family at that time.
One of Mangione’s closest friends, Tracy Le, a data analyst in New York, was “shaken” by the controversy and spoke up for his morals.
Hours after Mangione was identified as the murder suspect, she shared a long tribute on Instagram Stories.
For a long, that was the only name whose FaceTime calls I would answer, so when I first got the news, I was hoping it was just a common name or an error. One of my closest, greatest, and most reliable pals was Luigi.
She went on: “I always turned to him for relationship issues, work grievances, and identity crisis outbursts. and always came away feeling better.
“He was intelligent, mature, kind, attentive, and caring. Every time I went to see him, I had complete faith that he would organize our excursions and that we would have the greatest time.
“I am shaken, I am blindsided, but most of all I am sad,” she wrote as she ended the tearful post. I’m devastated. I feel overburdened.
According to R.J. Martin, the creator of the co-living community Surfbreak, Mangione’s pals stopped communicating with him this summer because he was experiencing persistent back discomfort that seemed to be caused by a pinched nerve.
“I adored this man. After Mangione was arrested, Martin remarked, “In some ways, I feel like my members are my kids.”
Mangione’s family is well off. The Ivy League graduate is the brother of a renowned doctor and the heir to his grandparents’ vacation resort fortune.
He is an anti-capitalist who attended Baltimore’s exclusive Gilman School, which costs $40,000 a year, and graduated as valedictorian in 2016. He is originally from Towson, Maryland, where he resided in a $1 million mansion with his parents.
According to a former Gilman classmate who wished to remain anonymous, “We attended the same school but didn’t really have the same friends.” This whole situation is quite shocking to me.
Since at least two gay men have come forward to say they have dated Mangione, more information about his personal life has also surfaced.
In addition to tweeting about psilocybin, sometimes referred to as magic mushrooms, online prior to the crime, Mangione also added two books to his Goodreads list: Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World: An Identification Guide and Mushrooms of Hawaii: An Identification Guide.
Prior to his court appearance, Mangione was being held at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) Huntingdon in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. It is anticipated that he would enter a not guilty plea.
