Greater Cincinnati Set to Experience Rare Heatwave: No Temperatures Like This in 10 Years

The National Weather Service predicts that Cincinnati may encounter temperatures not seen in over a decade.

According to meteorologists, Greater Cincinnati should expect highs of 96 to 98 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday. They also mentioned that temperatures of 98 degrees or higher haven’t been seen since 2012.

The National Weather Service has issued a health alert for the Greater Cincinnati area beginning at noon on Tuesday and continuing until 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Weather experts are predicting heat index readings as high as 102 degrees, with the possibility of heat-related illnesses due to the high temperatures and humidity.

It is recommended that residents stay indoors in air-conditioned rooms, drink enough of fluids, and avoid vigorous outside activity during the heat waves.

Cincinnati area school closures and dismissals

Two schools in the Greater Cincinnati area are among the Ohio schools that have announced early dismissals. Some grades have even been canceled by one school district in the Cincinnati region.

The Finneytown Local Schools system announced on X (previously Twitter) that, owing to the extreme heat, kids from the Secondary Campus will be released from school at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

In an email to parents, the Oak Hills School District announced that students at Oak Hills High School, Bridgetown Middle School, and Delhi Middle School will all be released early for the rest of the week.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priorities, and this measure will help minimize exposure to potentially unsafe temperatures,” according to the email.

Classes will not continue as scheduled for the remainder of this week at the Lockland Schools main campus, which serves students in grades five through twelve. The building is now without air conditioning as a result of construction. The educational annex of the district will remain the site of instruction for grades pre-K through four.

Cincinnati region is under an air quality alert.

On Tuesday, air quality was also a concern according to the Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency. There is an alert for the following counties in Ohio: Butler, Clermont, Hamilton, and Warren; for counties in Kentucky: Boone, Campbell, and Kenton; and for counties in Indiana: Dearborn.

There will likely be ozone values on the Air Quality Index that are “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” according to the government. As a result, while the general population is unlikely to be impacted, some individuals may have adverse health effects.

High approaching 97 degrees and mostly sunny skies are expected on Friday. After 8 p.m., there’s a risk of thunderstorms and showers. Lows in the 70s, with clouds mostly overhead.

On Saturday, there is a potential for rain and thunderstorms. We will get a mix of sunshine and clouds, with a high of 85 degrees. Tonight, clouds will part and the low will be around 66.

Sunday: Sunny and about 87 degrees. Lows about 60 degrees and partly overcast skies overnight.
