A tragic accident in East Harlem on Monday afternoon has resulted in the death of one man and critical injuries to another. The incident occurred as the two men were crossing the street and were struck by a vehicle that failed to navigate the road properly.
According to police reports, the collision happened when a driver lost control and hit two males who were crossing the street. The accident was so severe that one of the victims, a 51-year-old man, was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem in critical condition. Unfortunately, the second 51-year-old victim was pronounced dead at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
The driver of the vehicle, who remained at the scene, was also taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. Initial reports indicate that the driver is expected to survive, though the exact nature of their injuries has not been detailed.
Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene, with the crash’s intensity heard even from nearby apartments. Gloria, a local resident, recounted the moment she heard the loud bang from her living room. “I was sitting in my living room and all of a sudden I heard a big bang. It was so hard. And when I came over to the window all I could see is people trying to get him out and they laid him on the ground,” she said.
Surveillance footage from the area reveals a disturbing sequence of events. The video shows a white sedan mounting a curb, crashing into a shopping cart being pushed by a woman. The car then struck a parked vehicle, which was pushed into the two men crossing the street.
Neighbors have expressed shock and grief over the incident, particularly because one of the victims was a well-known figure in the community. “We did homework, he comes from a long way. There were things, but my baby changed, he tried to do the right thing. He was a nice guy, he’d make you laugh all the time,” a neighbor shared. Another neighbor fondly remembered how the victim used to visit and provide comfort during their battle with cancer.
