One day after husband Joe Biden announced his contentious decision to take on his troubled son Hunter, Jill, 73, proudly displayed her decorations on Monday, December 2. Her “tacky” design choices were quickly criticized.
Jill chose “A Season for Peace and Light” as this year’s theme.
Jill’s vision was realized with 83 Christmas trees, over 28,125 ornaments, over 9,800 feet of ribbon, 165,000 holiday lights, and a gingerbread house reminiscent of the White House made out of 25 sheets of gingerbread dough, 10 sheets of sugar cookie dough, 65 pounds of hard icing, 45 pounds of chocolate, 50 pounds of royal icing, and 10 pounds of gum paste.
On social media, detractors criticized the first lady’s decisions in spite of the enormous task.
Images showed a number of White House rooms decked out for the holidays, but the décor was anything but conventional.
Rooms were decorated with multicolored lights Christmas ornaments, rainbow-striped draperies, and wacky novelty items like a huge carousel, in place of basic garland and bows.
“Jill Biden’s Christmas decorations look like what would happen if a group of circus clowns projectile vomitted all over the White House, which I guess is the perfect metaphor to sum up the last four years,” wrote one critic on X, who posted three pictures of Jill’s decorations and made fun of her husband’s administration.
Some users commented with pictures of clowns making fun of Jill’s theme, while another user said the décor “looks like the carnival.”
While Melania Trump was criticized for her Christmas décor choices during her husband Donald Trump’s first presidency, others used the occasion to brag about her previous First Ladyship.
Someone more wrote: “Jill Biden just presented her White House Christmas decorations, and it’s truly the ugliest thing ever.”
Jill, who has an education background and continues to teach at a small college following Biden’s election, has been pushing the envelope with her holiday décor for the past three years.
Jill chose a circus-inspired ensemble that was accentuated with candy cane-striped decorations, presumably to attract to young visitors to the White House over the holiday season, in keeping with this year’s Christmas theme.
The decorations chosen to decorate entrances across the White House included an enormous reindeer drawn by a sleigh, heaps of red presents, and gigantic ornaments.
