Jenna Cuomo, a graduating senior from Cherokee High School, has been awarded the prestigious $5,000 Waste Management/Pine Bluff Landfill Scholarship. This scholarship, presented annually as part of Waste Management’s partnership with the Cherokee County School District (CCSD), recognizes outstanding academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and community service.
Each year, Waste Management selects a designated school, with Cherokee High being chosen for the Class of 2024. All graduating seniors from the designated school are eligible to apply for the scholarship. A committee comprising community members, Waste Management representatives, and CCSD officials carefully reviews and scores applications to choose a deserving recipient.
Cuomo’s exceptional accomplishments and dedication stood out among the applicants. She has demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to serving her community. With plans to pursue a career in biological research, Cuomo will attend the University of Georgia in the fall to study biology.
During her time at Cherokee High, Cuomo immersed herself in various activities, including serving as a lab technician intern for the science department. She is also a member of the track and field team and co-founder and co-president of the school’s Paw-sitive Warriors Club, which focuses on service dog programs.
Cuomo’s volunteer work extends beyond the school grounds. She dedicates her time to organizations such as the Papagayo Rescue House for rescued birds and The Kid Factory, in addition to tutoring at the school’s tutoring center. Her involvement in clubs like the National English Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society showcases her multifaceted talents and interests.
Reflecting on her experiences, Cuomo emphasized the importance of community engagement and the impact of collective efforts in making a difference. She believes in the power of small acts of kindness and is driven by a sense of responsibility to contribute positively to society.
