The tragic death of 15-year-old Mia Dieguez, a student at Dunwoody High School, has sent shockwaves through the community after an autopsy revealed she died from acute fentanyl intoxication. Mia was found unresponsive in class, prompting immediate emergency response efforts that unfortunately did not save her life.
According to reports, Mia appeared to be sleeping in class before lunch when classmates discovered she was unresponsive. Despite efforts to revive her, Mia could not be awakened and was later pronounced dead at Children’s Scottish Rite Hospital.
Family members initially suspected Mia had accidentally ingested fentanyl, possibly from a pill given to her at school. These suspicions were confirmed by the autopsy report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which also indicated the presence of THC and naloxone in her system. The latter substance, naloxone, is used to counter opioid overdoses, suggesting efforts were made to revive Mia.
In response to Mia’s death, a minor suspect was swiftly arrested on charges including involuntary manslaughter. Due to their age, the suspect will be tried in juvenile court, with their identity withheld from the public.
The autopsy report classifying Mia’s death as “undetermined” leaves authorities to determine its exact categorization, whether accidental, natural, or potentially criminal. Mia’s family has refuted suggestions of suicide, emphasizing she did not intend to harm herself despite personal struggles.
