A serene evening at the Sweetwater Campground Day Use Area on Fields Chapel Road in Canton turned into a nightmare on June 16, when an altercation between two men ended in gunfire. Cherokee Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene around 6 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. Witnesses provided a description of the suspected shooter and his vehicle, which was quickly relayed to 911 dispatchers.
Acting swiftly, a Cherokee Sheriff’s deputy spotted the suspect’s vehicle traveling west on Knox Bridge Highway towards Bartow County. The vehicle was stopped, and Gregory Eugene Hall, 42, of Lithonia, was detained. A firearm was discovered in Hall’s vehicle, leading to his identification as the shooting suspect.
Investigators revealed that the confrontation was between Hall and Maurice Winsell, 39, of Cartersville, who were strangers prior to the incident. The conflict escalated, resulting in Winsell being shot three times. He was urgently transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Hall faces multiple serious charges including Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Currently held at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center without bond, Hall’s actions and the circumstances leading up to the shooting are under ongoing investigation.
