A tragic accident at Santa Cruz’s Moran Beach has left a Georgia family grieving the loss of Hans Materne, an Atlanta resident, husband, and father. Materne, who was visiting the beach on June 5, jumped into the ocean from a cliff—a popular local activity—but tragically never resurfaced.
The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m., and emergency personnel responded promptly to the scene. Despite their immediate life-saving efforts, Materne was pronounced dead shortly after being retrieved from the water. Officials from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the heartbreaking news, noting that high currents had pulled him under, leading to his untimely death.
Materne’s wife, Astrid Restrepo, shared the devastating impact of the loss through a GoFundMe campaign aimed at raising funds to bring his body back to Atlanta for a proper burial. “I lost my husband, the father of my daughter, and my other half,” Restrepo expressed in the fundraiser. “I will never forget our time together. But now I have to overcome this loss, bring him back home from California, and give him a proper burial with all the people he loved.”
The fundraiser highlights the deep emotional and logistical challenges faced by the family in the wake of this tragedy. Restrepo is seeking support to cover the expenses of transporting Materne’s body back to Georgia and ensuring a respectful farewell surrounded by loved ones.
Authorities have indicated that foul play is not suspected in Materne’s death, reinforcing that it was a tragic accident caused by the perilous ocean currents.
