Are you a fan of history or of good old mysteries? Living in Woodstock is perfect for those that have an appetite for what once was! The Cherokee County History and Visitors Center offers downloadable and printable walking tour brochures. Historical points of interest are shared on these tour brochures. While the Woodstock Convention and Visitor’s Bureau sponsors fun events, such as the Scarecrow Invasion, they also share little tidbits of fun information for the history lover in all of us! Recently, one of the posts on the Downtown Woodstock Instagram caught our eye. It was an image of Salon Bastille which is located off of Main Street. Part of the caption read: “Did you know the building was the former location of the Woodstock Jail? Just another interesting aspect of the history of Downtown Woodstock.#woodstockga #downtownwoodstock“
We had heard this before, but we wanted to find out more! Certainly, if the walls could talk, they would tell stories of the past. After double checking, the historic jail is located on the downtown Woodstock walking tour from the Cherokee County History and Visitors Center. There are a total of four tours that are readily available. One is for downtown Woodstock, another for downtown Canton, and another for the Cherokee County Historic Courthouse and Jail, and finally another for the Riverview Cemetery.
The downtown Woodstock brochure highlights a total of 26 locations throughout the downtown area that are of historical interest. Located at the rear of 8654 Main Street, the historic jail is listed as stop number 22 on the tour.
