Tyson Foods has announced plans to shut down one of its facilities in Rome, Georgia, a move that will result in 168 employees losing their jobs.
According to an official notice sent to state authorities, the plant—operated under The Hillshire Brands Company—will cease operations due to a loss of business contracts. The layoffs are scheduled to take effect on May 31.
The company shared the update in a letter dated March 26, which was addressed to the Georgia Department of Labor and Rome Mayor Jim Bojo.
In its statement, Tyson expressed regret over the decision, acknowledging the impact on workers and their families. The company said it aims to carry out the closure with as little disruption as possible for employees and the surrounding community.
This development comes just months after Tyson carried out large-scale layoffs affecting around 5,000 workers at facilities in Texas and Nebraska earlier in 2026, signaling broader operational changes within the company.
The closure marks another economic setback for the local workforce, as officials and employees now prepare for the transition in the coming months.
