19-Year-Old Charged After 12-Year-Old Mishandles Gun in Deadly LaGrange Shooting

A tragic shooting in LaGrange has led to multiple charges against a 19-year-old, after police say his actions allowed a child to access a loaded firearm that was later discharged, killing a man.

According to the LaGrange Police Department, Azion Avery is facing several charges, including felony involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct, furnishing a firearm to a minor, providing false statements, and theft by receiving a stolen firearm.

Deadly Incident Unfolds

Officers responded to a call around 8:45 p.m. on March 25 in the 60 block of North Cary Street, where they found a person suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim, Nyquarious Gates, was rushed to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center but later died from his injuries.

Police Say Child Mishandled Weapon

Investigators determined that the shooting occurred when a 12-year-old boy mishandled a loaded firearm, causing it to discharge and strike Gates.

The juvenile was taken into custody following the incident.
