Dining Dilemmas: Spanky’s Falters with 41, While Fairway Social Flourishes with Perfect 100

Recent health inspections in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties have revealed a stark contrast in the cleanliness and safety standards of local eateries.

Spanky’s Chicken and Seafood, located on Candler Road in Decatur, found itself in hot water after receiving a dismal score of 41 points, resulting in a “U” for unsatisfactory. The inspection report detailed concerning findings, including unsafe temperatures for chicken wings, cheese, and tomatoes, as well as food debris and dead roaches discovered in the vicinity of food preparation areas.

Atlanta News First took action to investigate the violations firsthand, only to encounter a less than cooperative response from the restaurant’s management. Despite attempts to engage with management on-site, contractors making repairs at the establishment revealed that the manager was unwilling to comment and remained in her car in the parking lot.

Subsequent inspections painted an equally grim picture, with Spanky’s failing to rectify the violations and earning a meager score of 64 points. As a result, the health department made the decisive move to shut down the restaurant, citing ongoing concerns for public safety.

Meanwhile, in DeKalb County, Touchdown Wings on South Hairston Road in Decatur faced renewed scrutiny after scoring a disappointing 74 points on a reinspection. Similarly, Harold’s Chicken and Ice Bar on Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth, located in Gwinnett County, showed improvement on a follow-up inspection, earning a respectable “A” grade with 96 points.

In contrast to these struggling establishments, Fairway Social on South Main Street in Alpharetta emerged as a shining example of excellence in hygiene and food safety. Garnering a perfect score of 100 on their latest health inspection, Fairway Social has secured the coveted Golden Spatula Award for their outstanding commitment to cleanliness and quality.

Boasting a dynamic atmosphere and family-friendly environment, Fairway Social offers patrons a unique entertainment experience with world-class simulators for golf and other sports, as well as a charming miniature golf course dubbed “The Back Nine,” featuring holes inspired by the Augusta National Course.
