Cherokee County School District proudly announces the remarkable achievements of its students at Georgia’s esteemed student theater conference, the Georgia Thespian Conference. The conference, known for its workshops, competitions, and performances, attracts high school theater students and educators from across the state. Students from Cherokee High School, Sequoyah High School, and Woodstock High School showcased their exceptional talents, earning top honors and individual accolades.
Superintendent Brian Hightower commended the students, expressing pride in their success at the state level and acknowledging their unwavering dedication to the theatrical arts. He also lauded the district’s theater programs for their continued excellence, attributing their success to outstanding teachers and unwavering support from parents, businesses, and the community.
At Cherokee High School, seniors Wyatt Darnell and Emmanuel Mwangi, along with sophomore Chesney Wise, earned Superior honors for their Group Musical Theatre performance of “Learn to Do It” from “Anastasia: The Musical.” Additionally, Cherokee High School received a Silver Award for its International Thespian Society troupe, a testament to its commitment to excellence and community service under the leadership of teacher Jodi Burn.
Sequoyah High School students showcased their prowess with senior Valor Lekas winning a Thespy for Technical Scenic Design, a first for a CCSD student. Junior Noah Popp was honored with the Technical Student Achievement Award, while junior Dakota Youngblood received Superior honors for Musical Theatre Solo Performance. Sequoyah students also excelled in Group Musical Theatre, earning Superior honors for their performance of “Prologue” from “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.”
Furthermore, Sequoyah students Valor Lekas, Noah Popp, and Ava Grace Roberts participated in the All-State Theatre Program and performed at the conference. They were joined by fellow students selected for the conference crew, showcasing their talents in lighting and set design. Sequoyah’s theater program, under the guidance of teacher Cindy Humphlett, continues to foster excellence in the performing arts.
Not to be outdone, Creekview High School senior Gray Creech clinched first place in the Costume Change Tech Challenge, highlighting the school’s commitment to technical proficiency under the leadership of teacher Lark Hylton.
Woodstock High School senior Breckin Cooley earned a Superior rating for Solo Musical Theatre, further demonstrating the district’s depth of talent in theatrical performance under the guidance of teacher Nicole Korch.
