A tragic shooting in LaGrange has led to multiple charges against a 19-year-old, after police say his actions allowed a child to access a loaded firearm that was later discharged, killing a man.
According to the LaGrange Police Department, Azion Avery is facing several charges, including felony involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct, furnishing a firearm to a minor, providing false statements, and theft by receiving a stolen firearm.
Deadly Incident Unfolds
Officers responded to a call around 8:45 p.m. on March 25 in the 60 block of North Cary Street, where they found a person suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim, Nyquarious Gates, was rushed to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center but later died from his injuries.
Police Say Child Mishandled Weapon
Investigators determined that the shooting occurred when a 12-year-old boy mishandled a loaded firearm, causing it to discharge and strike Gates.
The juvenile was taken into custody following the incident.
Gun Linked to 19-Year-Old
In a later update, police confirmed that the firearm involved belonged to Avery, who was present at the scene when the shooting happened.
Authorities say the child gained access to the weapon due to Avery’s negligence.
“It was determined through Avery’s negligent actions that the minor came into possession of and mishandled the firearm, leading to the death,” police stated.
Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Avery has since been arrested and booked into the Troup County Jail.
Officials say the investigation is still ongoing, and additional details may be released as the case develops.
