Woodstock High School seniors Carson Bove, Camden Browning, and Mary Hogrefe have achieved an outstanding accomplishment by securing the third position in an esteemed international engineering competition. The competition, known as the Real-World Design Challenge, is renowned for its rigorous evaluation of students’ engineering prowess and their ability to tackle real-world problems. Under the guidance of their dedicated teacher, Melanie Salas, the trio showcased their innovative approach to addressing one of today’s pressing issues: wildfire mitigation.
Their project, named CRISPI (Compact Robotic Imagery System for Preventing Infernos), not only impressed the judges with its ingenuity but also demonstrated a deep understanding of the complexities involved in combating wildfires. By designing a backpack-sized drone equipped with advanced functionalities, including fire lookout capabilities, environmental monitoring sensors, and wildfire prediction algorithms, the students showcased their comprehensive grasp of engineering principles and their practical application.
Moreover, their victory in the statewide competition earlier this year highlights the consistent excellence demonstrated by Woodstock High School’s Career Pathway: Engineering and Technology program. This program, designed to nurture students’ interests and skills in engineering fields, has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in shaping the success of Bove, Browning, and Hogrefe.
As they prepare to embark on their respective journeys in higher education, with Hogrefe enrolling in Kennesaw State University, Bove pursuing biomedical engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Browning focusing on mechanical engineering with a specialization in robotics at the University of Florida, their achievements serve as an inspiration to aspiring engineers everywhere.
