Upcoming Event: Memorial Day Program at Georgia National Cemetery

May 22, 2012

This Memorial Day weekend, the Department of Veteran Affairs is teaming up with Georgia National Cemetery to present a Memorial Day Program to remember and honor all military members who have served or are currently serving our nation.

The program will feature Colonel (Chaplain) Robert G. Certain, retired member of the United States Air Force as the keynote speaker and will start on Saturday, May 26th at 11:00am. Colonel Certain started his military career with the Vietnam War. Following Vietnam, he attended the School of Theology in Sewanee, TN and was ordained as a priest in 1976 after receiving his Master of Divinity degree. As a military chaplain, he served in the Air Force on active duty and in the reserves. Colonel Certain is the author of Unchained Eagle: From Prisoner of War to Prisoner of Christ and The Spiritual Quest, as well as contributed a number of articles in The Living Church, The Military Chaplain, and various other magazines.

It is recommended that visitors arrive between 9:30-10:00am and bring a chair, umbrella and bottled water. There will be limited seating for the handicapped and elderly, and a shuttle service will be provided by the Atlanta VA Medical Center within the cemetery.

In addition to Colonel Robert G. Certain,  Congressman Phil Gingrey will speak.  Prior to GNC Memorial Day Program, The Knights of Columbus will conduct Mass in the Assembly Area beginning at 8:15am and Gravesite Flag Placement will occur at 10:00am under the direction of Troop 241 of the Boy Scouts of America.

Music for the program will be provided by the Cherokee Community Chorale/Conductor Don Stafford and Georgia State Defense Force 105th Band, 76th Support Brigade/Corporal Marc Kornfield.

For directions to Georgia National Cemetery or to get more information about the service, please contact Margaret Helgerson, Cemetery Director at 770-479-9300.
