Due to the state’s Democratic supermajority, California is reportedly contemplating a measure that would allow illegal immigrants to get house loans of up to $150,000.
This week, the Democratically controlled California state legislature is expected to approve a measure that would expand eligibility for the “California Dream for All” home loan program to include undocumented immigrants.
If a first-time or first-generation homeowner’s income is below particular county limits, they may be eligible for up to $150,000 in down payment help under this program.
The timing of this idea couldn’t be more opportune, given that immigration has dominated the national political landscape this election season.
The Trump campaign has made an effort to associate Vice President Kamala Harris with the controversial border policies enacted by the Biden administration.
If the bill reaches Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk before the conclusion of the state’s legislative session on August 31, he has not said whether he will sign it into law. Governor Newsom has been a key surrogate for President Biden and VP Harris, according to AOL.
Fox News Digital reached out to a representative for Newsom, who stated that the governor “doesn’t typically comment on pending legislation.”

“The Governor will evaluate the bill on its merits if it reaches his desk,” the spokeswoman stated.
At the same time, Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt called the measure “fundamentally unfair but typical Democrat policy” in an interview with Politico.
Legislators from the state’s Democratic party have defended the bill, saying it’s only meant to provide undocumented immigrants with the same rights as legal residents.
“It isn’t given out willy nilly to just anybody,” Democratic Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes said during a bill hearing in June.
Democratic Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula has stated that the proposed law maintains the current criteria for eligibility for the house loan program, which include having a taxpayer identity number or Social Security number.
According to Arambula, the fundamental problem is a federal statute that makes it illegal for undocumented immigrants to get state assistance unless the state specifically states that they are eligible.
“Our goal was to ensure that all individuals paying taxes in our state could be eligible, so we tried to be as inclusive as possible with our policies,” Arambula explained to Politico.
“We are introducing this law because we believe that many in the immigrant community would have complications and questions in the absence of this law.”
