Man Receives Life Sentence for Fatal Shooting in Cherokee County

Brackus James Golden, 26, of Canton, has been handed a life sentence plus an additional 20 years in prison by Superior Court Judge Tony Baker, marking the conclusion of a harrowing legal saga. Golden’s sentencing comes after he pleaded guilty to 16 charges related to the murder of Kevin Misidi, 27, of Canton, and domestic violence aggravated assault charges involving his child’s mother.

The tragedy unfolded on June 5, 2022, when Golden, armed and fueled by rage, confronted Misidi outside the home where Misidi resided with his family. Despite pleas and attempts to seek refuge, Golden unleashed a barrage of violence, breaking into the home and assaulting Misidi and the mother of his children in front of their terrified offspring.

Assistant District Attorney Chavis, who prosecuted the case, described Golden’s actions as “brutal, cruel, and clearly intent on murder.” His disregard for human life culminated in the fatal shooting of Misidi, leaving a family shattered and a community reeling from the senseless violence.

The courtroom reverberated with the poignant words of Misidi’s family members, who shared the indelible mark of grief etched upon their souls. Their victim impact statements underscored the profound loss and enduring pain inflicted by Golden’s callous actions.

Despite Golden’s plea for mercy during sentencing, District Attorney Susan Treadaway emphasized the absence of mercy in his execution of Misidi. She highlighted the ripple effect of his actions, particularly on the children who are now fatherless due to his senseless violence.

The diligent efforts of law enforcement led to Golden’s apprehension, but not before he inflicted further harm upon himself with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His attempt to evade justice was thwarted, and he was ultimately held accountable for his heinous crimes.
