Downtown Atlanta Chaos: Bomb Threat Follows Food Court Shooting at 230 Peachtree Street

Downtown Atlanta faced a fresh wave of panic on Wednesday after a bomb threat was reported at 230 Peachtree Street, just a day after a man opened fire inside the food court of the same building.

The food court shooting on Tuesday left four people injured, including the shooter. Former DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James, who was present during the incident, described the chaotic scene. “There was confusion because it sounded like almost like something had fallen,” James said, recounting how the noise quickly escalated into recognizable gunfire. “It was clear that that was gunfire and there was a dispute, and all hell broke loose and people just started running everywhere.”

Witness Salihah Johnson, who also witnessed the shooting, returned to the area on Wednesday to renew her passport. She was caught up in the bomb threat evacuation. “They were like move back! It’s a bomb threat!” Johnson told Channel 2’s Audrey Washington.

The Atlanta Police Department, along with Homeland Security, evacuated the building and deployed explosive detection canines to sweep the area. “Explosive detection canines from various jurisdictions responded to assist in sweeping the building,” said Captain Neil Welch with the Atlanta Police Department. The building was eventually cleared, and occupants were allowed back inside.

At a press conference, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum confirmed that the food court shooting remains under investigation. He shared his observations from the surveillance footage, noting the varied reactions of people during the active shooter situation. “Quickly moving to places of shelter, getting out of the area. We also saw people freeze. They froze. Didn’t move and could have easily been victim number four,” Schierbaum remarked.
