Present Former Woodstock police officer Matthew Shaw was given a $50,000 bond on Monday after being charged with the October shooting death of 20-year-old Emmanuel Millard. Canton native Shaw is accused of involuntary manslaughter in relation to the unfortunate event.
The events surrounding Millard’s death started on October 12 at night when police tried to stop Millard’s Hyundai for several moving infractions close to Highway 92 and Hames Road in Woodstock. Millard apparently tried to escape as things became worse, sending police into Cobb County. Woodstock police described a perilous pursuit in which Millard swerved off the road, squeezing by civilian cars and even trying to hit police cars.
The chase ended dramatically when police used a precise immobilization technique (PIT) to stop Millard’s automobile, which crashed close to Cobb County’s Highway 92 and Old Mountain Park Road. Shaw, a Woodstock police officer at the time, shot Millard once during the ensuing effort to arrest him.
Two days after receiving critical injuries, Millard passed away from his wounds in the hospital. Shaw’s body camera caught the encounter, which illuminated the circumstances before the tragic shooting.
As is usual procedure in situations involving officer-involved shootings, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) looked into the matter independently. Shaw was put on administrative leave at this period and subsequently left the Woodstock Police Department. After finishing its investigation, the GBI gave the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office its findings for additional examination.
Given the charge and the ensuing court cases, Shaw was given a $50,000 bond on Monday. He was released on the proviso that he not contact the victim’s family and not to carry any firearms.
